I Am @ Youth.SG

Ever since my cousin passed away at the young age of 15 few years back because of leukemia, I finally learnt what cherishing life is all about. As a child, life was just about playing, so I didn’t really had a memorable childhood. That’s why I promised myself: I MUST have a memorable and wonderful time being a youth!

After particaipating in the 2004 NDP, I found my interest in performing in such big events.

You call it “attention seeker” or what (I don’t care), but I just love the feeling of satisfaction after everyone around Singapore had seen our wonderful performance on TV or live. And when the crowd cheered, I would be like “they are cheering for me, mE, ME!!! Those tiring practices were worthwhile.” So when I was given the opportunity to participate in this year’s Chingay parade under the Japanese Association of Singapore, I jumped to it! Despite my family’s discouragement, I did not give up on this chance to perform. In fact, I put in my best effort for this first-time performance.

Though we had missed many Chingay rehearsals (we were informed late that we have been accepted to join them), I was determined to master all the dance steps within the last 4 rehearsals. Of course I was damn disappointed to hear that even my dearest brother said it is a waste of time. He didn’t understand that I wana do everything that I like NOW because life is so unpredictable. I wanna live my life as a youth to the fullest because I might be like my deceased cousin one day. Or maybe, I will just meet an accident tomorrow; no one knows.

Luckily all the discouragements didn’t affect my passion, I put in my best effort and we did a great job!

Though both videos didn’t really feature our whole performance, I’m glad to know that there were people who had video-ed us! Looking at the videos really makes me so proud, even now. =)

So when I realised (through their blogs) that 2 of my secondary school friends are taking drugs and glue-sniffing, I was not only heartache, but totally disappointed in them. How can they waste their youth like this?! Even though my cousin and I weren’t close, I believe there are a lot of things he had wanted to do, but didn’t had the chance. Yet these people are shortening their life by self-destructing it. By the time they die, what wonderful memories can they have? Days when they drugged? Or remorseful periods when they were struggling in drug rehabilitation centres? Even this 83 years old performer

knows how to live life to the fullest, yet these bunch of youths are happily in their so-called “heaven”, but actually hell.

[ I have the sudden urge to add on to my previous update after hearing the shocking news from my good friend. The VJC girl who had passed away recently while doing her 2.4km run (New Paper) is actually her (my good friend) friend. Another youth gone from this world...unexpectedly, just like cousin. Another to spur me on to live my life to the max. ]

So I wouldn’t wanna be such a failure like my 2 secondary schoolmates. I wana be a youth with lots and lots of life experiences!!! I’m gonna help my cousin live his life on! =)

P.s. Being youthful is NOT about the age, NOT by using SK II product, but all about the burning passion.

and i really like your entry. my ex boyfriend died of the same disease your cousin had, and it kinda woke me up how we can all just die one day without even expecting it to come so soon.

I totally agree with your final statement Vivian - “Being youthful is…all about the burning passion.” …

Now if more people were like that too, they’ll learn to enjoy their life a lot more and not regret that they didn’t do this or that when they were younger…

I guess the burning passion is something even our elderly should adopt….I really respect those few who work in McDonald’s even after retirement or do their degree in their 50s…coz they showed this passion…

    Kudos to you!… :)
